Man United star seeks £2m for ‘defective’ boots – Daily Telegraph

‘A Manchester United footballer who is suing New Balance over “defective” boots was told by an executive at the sportswear company that they would “copy” Nike boots for him, it is claimed. Marouane Fellaini, 30, has alleged that his New Balance boots had to be “steamed and stretched” by a United kit man before they would fit. An investment company representing him has sued the American giant and is seeking £2 million damages.’

‘Joey Barton, the controversial Burnley FC midfielder (and sometime BBC Question Time panellist), was in December 2016 charged by the FA with a breach of rule E8: betting. It was said that he had placed 1,260 bets on professional football matches over a ten-year period. He pleaded guilty to the alleged misconduct. An FA regulatory commission (the “Commission”) was convened to hear submissions and decide on sanction. Its decision, made on 26 April 2017, was to suspend Barton from all football-related activities for 18 months with immediate effect.’

The great Bill Shankly once said that players like these were a menace to society and that he would lock them up if he could. In these more liberal days, fans still ask why it is that a “want away” player’s contract cannot be enforced to oblige him to play. The answer is that English contract law has a rule against the compelled performance of personal services, by employees.’
