Women’s Rights and the Proposed Changes to the Gender Recognition Act – Oxford Human Rights Hub

Posted August 21st, 2018 in consultations, equality, gender, human rights, news, women by sally

‘In this post we use the word women to refer to individuals born as women (also known as ‘natal women’). The current government consultation on proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act 2004 (GRA) has opened up space for discussions about who defines what it means to be a woman and who controls the boundaries to women’s places of association. Central to those debates are the safety, dignity, and privacy of women using sex-segregated spaces. These are significant matters, which raise complex issues for women, which is why so many feminists are adding their voices to the public debate. These are women who support trans-rights but whose genuine concerns, based on expertise and lived experience, are being silenced by accusations of ‘hate speech’ and ‘transphobia’.’

The legal process for gender recognition – Family Law

Posted May 30th, 2018 in evidence, gender, news by sally

‘We have a legal system in the UK that recognises every individual as either a man or a woman and this is usually determined by what it says on your birth certificate. It is increasingly recognised and accepted however that gender identity (that is to say the gender we most identify with) is not always the same as the gender we are born into.’

Gender Recognition, Self-Determination and Segregated Space – Oxford Human Rights Hub

Posted January 17th, 2018 in consultations, gender, news, sexual offences by sally

‘In July 2017, the Government announced a public consultation on legal gender recognition in the United Kingdom. In particular, it will invite opinion and advice on plans to adopt a model of self-determination (similar to that currently applied in other European jurisdictions, such as Ireland). Self-determination would allow trans persons to obtain a Gender Recognition Certificate on the basis of a statutory declaration, without oversight by a Gender Recognition Panel (s. 1 of the Gender Recognition Act 2004 (GRA 2004)), a diagnosis of gender dysphoria or having to prove real life experience (GRA 2004, s. 2).’
